Every load sends lint into the duct, and a share of it stays there, especially at elbows, in long runs and at a roof termination. The duct narrows, the dryer runs hotter and longer, and damp air backs up. Washington's residential code sets clear limits for these ducts, including a maximum length for a 4-inch metal duct and a backdraft damper at the outside end. We clean the full run from the dryer to the termination, check the damper and the transition hose, and tell you if the duct itself does not meet the rules.
In lakefront homes where the dryer vents through the roof or a long run to a far wall, lint and damp air have further to travel. Those setups need cleaning more often than a short straight vent.
A clogged vent makes the dryer work harder, wastes energy and keeps the machine and duct hotter than they are designed to run.
Under the 2021 Washington State Residential Code, dryer exhaust must end outside the house, with a backdraft damper, no screen, and 3 feet or more of clearance from doors, windows and other openings. The duct must be 4-inch smooth metal, no longer than 35 feet, minus 5 feet for each 90-degree elbow and 2.5 feet for each 45-degree elbow, and the flexible transition duct behind the dryer may be one piece no longer than 8 feet and never concealed. Screens and long, twisting runs are exactly where lint collects. Cleaning restores airflow; if the duct itself breaks those rules, we tell you.
