Woodinville, King County
Chimney work in Woodinville follows the shape of the town. Most houses went up in the last forty years, heated by electricity or gas, with a fireplace or stove kept for cold evenings rather than daily heat. The weather is the constant: a long wet season in the Sammamish River valley, wind through the winter months, and summers that now bring wildfire smoke and burn bans. This page gathers what applies here, with the sources behind it.

Woodinville takes its name from Ira and Susan Woodin, who homesteaded 160 acres in 1871, and the community grew once the railroad arrived in 1888. In 1909 it built the first brick school east of Lake Washington. In 1911 Frederick Stimson renamed the Derby logging settlement Hollywood, and his farm site later became Chateau Ste. Michelle, which opened in 1976 as the city's first winery. Voters approved incorporation in 1992 by 52 votes, and the city was formed in 1993 with about 8,000 residents; Census estimates now put it at 13,438. The comprehensive plan divides it into eight neighborhood areas: North Industrial, West Wellington, Wedge, East Wellington, Woodinville Heights, Reinwood/Leota, Lower West Ridge and Upper West Ridge.
The Census puts the median Woodinville home at 1995. Only about 1 percent of its 5,626 housing units predate 1960 and about 19.5 percent predate 1980, well below King County as a whole, where the median is 1983. Roughly a quarter of the city's homes were built in the 1980s alone.
For chimneys, that means fewer century-old brick stacks and more factory-built fireplaces in framed chases, masonry chimneys from the 1960s to 1980s, and gas units from the start. Each ages differently: chase covers rust, crowns crack, gas vents collect debris.
Little Bear Creek runs beside SR 522 through downtown Woodinville's commercial area and then joins the Sammamish River. In WeatherSpark's model, rain is likely on any given day for close to seven months, early October through the first days of May, and November is the peak at roughly eight and a half inches.
The cool season runs from mid-November to about March 1, December brings average lows near 38°F, and the snowy period is short, centered on December and January. Wind picks up from mid-October to mid-April. Rain on the wind, day after day, is what wears crowns, flashing and caps here.
Of Woodinville's roughly 5,425 occupied homes, the Census estimates about 50.6 percent heat mainly with electricity and 47.4 percent with natural gas. Wood is the primary fuel in about five, a count with a wide margin of error. The survey only records the main fuel, not how many homes have a fireplace or stove they use on the side.
That distinction matters under a burn ban. The only households Puget Sound Clean Air Agency lets keep burning are those whose wood device is their sole adequate heat and who obtained an exemption in advance. In a Stage 2 ban, even certified stoves and pellet stoves go cold without one.
Woodinville Fire & Rescue does not allow outdoor burning inside the city limits, and asks that any open flame stay ten feet from houses, structures and vegetation, with no green wood, construction waste, plastic or yard waste in the fire.
The wider risk has grown. Governor Ferguson declared a statewide wildfire emergency and burn ban from August 1 to September 30, 2026, after more than 1,000 fires had burned about 425,000 acres. For a chimney, that means a sound cap and spark screen, and a flue that is clean before the first fire of autumn.

Putting in a new fireplace or stove, moving one, or swapping it for another all count as mechanical work in Woodinville, and each needs a city permit. Its combined building, mechanical and plumbing application lists wood and pellet stoves, wood and gas inserts, gas logs, gas and manufactured fireplaces and zero-clearance fireplaces on the fixture list. According to the city's permitting FAQ, work done without a permit can be ordered removed, and fines are possible.
The rules behind those permits are the 2021 Washington State codes, which King County uses for any application judged complete from March 15, 2024 onward. Next in line is the 2024 cycle, drawn from the 2024 IRC, IMC and IFGC, which the state's code council plans to put into force on May 3, 2027.

Each chimney is $99 plus tax. If you then accept the repair quote, the $99 is subtracted from the repair bill.
Usually not. A Stage 1 ban stops wood fireplaces and uncertified stoves; Stage 2 stops all wood and pellet devices except in a house that depends on that device for its only adequate heat and holds a pre-approved exemption.
Yes. An insert is a mechanical appliance in the city's eyes, and inserts, stoves and gas logs all appear on Woodinville's permit form.
