Kenmore's houses span a wide range of ages: ranch homes from the fifties on the slopes above the lake, split-levels from the sixties and seventies, and newer townhomes near the river and along the highway. The chimney behind each one may be original brick, a brick stack that received an insert later, or a factory-built flue inside a framed chase. The 2021 Washington State Residential Code, based on the 2021 IRC, became King County's standard for permit applications accepted as complete from March 15, 2024 onward. Among other things it wants a masonry chimney lined with approved materials, such as clay tile or a listed lining system, and a 2-inch airspace to combustibles when the chimney is inside or on an exterior wall.
